FAQs

What is a massage like?

The most common type of massage is Swedish massage. This style consists of long, flowing strokes, with surface friction, light tapping, kneading and joint movement.

What can I expect at my first appointment?

You will be asked to fill out a health questionnaire to determine your general health status. Based on your information, a specific treatment plan will be determined to meet your needs.  After the session, we will discuss how effective your massage was and how you are feeling.  These "interviews" are performed at each session to determine progress and are included within the session time.

For a full body Swedish massage, most people undress completely, though you may choose to wear underwear. You will be given privacy to undress and get on the table. For your comfort, you will relax on a padded table under a sheet and blanket. You will be covered with the exception of the area being worked on. The treatment room will be warm and quiet with soft music to enhance your relaxation.

Depending on the techniques used, either oil, lotion or cream will be used in your massage. Please let your therapist know if you are allergic to any lubricant.

What should I do during a massage?

Make yourself comfortable. If you need to adjust your position to  become

more comfortable, do so at any time. You will be offered supports to relieve any discomfort, such as a pillow for under your knees while lying on your back. This will reduce pressure on your lower back.

Many people close their eyes during a session (some even fall asleep). It is best to refrain from chatting during your massage in order to allow yourself to completely relax, but if you have any questions, feel free to ask at any time.

How will a massage feel?

Working an area of injury or chronic pain may cause discomfort at first, but it will usually subside in the first few minutes. Massage on healthy tissue feels good. The normal response is to slow down, breathe deeply and relax.

You may experience "rumbling" in your stomach - this is normal since your circulation has increased. (Remember to drink plenty of water after your massage. This will help flush toxins from your system.)
